Fueling Education
Implementing a Feeding Program to Increase School Attendance
Since our teacher’s house is complete, we’re embarking on a new fundraiser. Our next long-range goal is to begin a feeding program at Chishi Community School. We want to increase school attendance so that as many children as possible have the opportunity to end the cycle of poverty. From our time in Zambia, we know that children are often kept at home to help with farming and other chores instead of attending school. A feeding program will help to alleviate some of these at-home pressures by providing children one meal a day. This will help to incentivize sending the children to school and will strengthen support within the community. Full bellies help fuel the learning process, allowing children to focus during lessons.
To begin this next chapter of Build a School, we have implemented an organic garden, chicken rearing program, and soya bean, maize, and potato fields with the help of our partner, the Green Living Movement (GLM). GLM has overseen the start-up and will provide training to the community on sustainable farming methods. We intend for these methods to be incorporated into the school curriculum and to be a basis for nutrition health talks. In addition to benefiting the feeding program by supplying food, any surplus will be sold and used to support the needs of the school and to begin other income generating projects. We’ll be asking parents, the volunteer teachers, dedicated community members and the Chishi Women’s Club to help us with this venture knowing that community support will ensure the project thrives.
We are asking for your help to reach our goal. Please check out the feeding program PowerPoint we’ve created and use the Donate button to help support this program.
Thank you for your continued support to help bring education to the children of Zambia.
